The American Forest & Paper Association released its April U.S. paper reports.

Containerboard

Containerboard production was 4.8 percent higher compared to April 2016. The month-over-month average daily production compared to March 2017 was 2.7 percent higher.

The containerboard operating rate for April increased from 96.7 percent to 97.1 percent, which was 1.9 percent higher compared to April of last year.

Printing-Writing Paper Report

According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 7 percent in April compared to April 2016. All four printing-writing grades posted year-over-year shipment declines in April, though the decline for coated free sheet was less than one-half of one percent. Total printing-writing paper inventory levels increased 2 percent from March 2017.

  • Uncoated free sheet (UFS) paper shipments declined year-over-year in April, the eighth consecutive year-over-year decrease. Imports of UFS increased 3 percent year-over-year in March and exports of UFS papers increased 1 percent year-over-year in March.
  • Shipments of coated free sheet (CFS) papers were essentially flat in April compared to last year. U.S. imports of CFS papers increased 1 percent year-over-year in March and exports of CFS papers increased 14 percent year-over-year in March.
  • Coated mechanical (CM) paper shipments decreased year-over-year in April, the third consecutive year-over-year decrease. Imports of CM decreased in March, down 6 percent compared to March 2016 and exports of CM were down 29 percent in March.
  • Shipments of uncoated mechanical (UM) papers decreased year-over-year in April for the tenth consecutive month. Imports of UM increased 4 percent year-over-year in March and exports of UM increased 2 percent in February.

Boxboard Report

Total boxboard production increased 3.2 percent when compared to April 2016, but decreased 3.5 percent from March.

Unbleached Kraft Boxboard production increased over the same month as last year and increased compared to March.

Total Solid Bleached Boxboard & Liner production increased when compared to April 2016, but decreased compared to March.

The production of Recycled Boxboard decreased compared to April 2016, and decreased when compared to March.
