The City of Port Angeles is pleased to announce the return of glass recycling services at both the Port Angeles Regional Transfer Station and the Blue Mountain Transfer Station. Glass will be accepted for recycling at these facilities and at no extra charge to residents.
Planning and procurement necessary for the process of glass recycling have been in the works for several months. A glass receiving recycler in the Seattle Metropolitan Area has been identified, glass hauling contracts have been established, and brand-new bins made especially for glass have been delivered and placed at the City-owned and operated transfer station facilities.
This service is available as part of the City’s Glass Recycling Pilot Program, which allows staff to assess the current demand for glass recycling and evaluate associated program costs. The data collected will inform the development of a long-term, sustainable glass recycling strategy. The information will be presented to City Council in late 2023 as part of an annual Solid Waste Cost of Service Analysis (COSA).
The pilot program includes the utilization of separate glass recycling bins, which prevent the co-mingling of glass with other recyclable materials. This will reduce contamination and allow for more efficient processing, thus keeping costs low.
The Port Angeles Regional Transfer Station, located at 3501 West 18th Street, is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Blue Mountain Transfer Station, located at 1024 Blue Mountain Road, is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, also from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Both locations will accept glass for recycling anytime they are open.
