The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that for the month of May 2026, U.S. steel mills shipped 8,141,900 net tons, an 8.5 percent increase from the 7,507,349 net tons shipped in May 2025. Shipments were up 6.2 percent from the 7,664,757 net tons shipped in the previous month, April 2026. Shipments year-to-date in 2026 are 38,990,601 net tons, up 4.6 percent vs. 2025 shipments of 37,285,289 net tons for five months.
A comparison of shipments year-to-date in 2026 to the first five months of 2025 shows the following changes: corrosion resistant sheet and strip, up 13 percent, hot rolled sheet and strip, up 6 percent and cold rolled sheet and strip, down 1 percent.
