NWRA Comments on NHTSA Proposed Rule to Require Side Guards on Certain Vehicles

Arlington, VA – The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) filed comments with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which expressed concern that the proposed rule to require side underride guards would not be practical for some operations in the waste and recycling industry.

“NWRA supports the safe operation of our industry’s vehicles, and we appreciate the opportunity to comment on this proposal,” said NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith. “We are concerned about the ineffectiveness of broken side guards resulting from regulations that do not take into account vehicles that travel along unimproved surfaces such as those found at landfills or vehicles that encounter below-grade loading areas at transfer stations. Any regulation must include enough flexibility to still enable a side guard system that works when operating outside of those facilities.”
