The City of Port St. Lucie, Florida and Waste Pro have reached a settlement agreement resolving the legal dispute related to their prior solid waste collection contract.
While the case had been scheduled for trial starting April 13, both sides engaged in continued extensive discussions and ultimately determined that a negotiated resolution would be in the best interest of all parties.
The agreement includes a cash settlement of $24 million to the City of Port St. Lucie. This payment fully resolves the lawsuit and includes both sides agreeing to release each other from all outstanding claims and formally dismiss the case.
The settlement concludes litigation initially filed in 2021 and expanded in 2022 by the City against Waste Pro, its former contracted waste hauler. The lawsuit cited issues related to Waste Pro’s performance and subsequent premature cancelation of its multi-year contract with the City, which forced Port St. Lucie to quickly find a new contracted waste hauler.
“This settlement will bring closure to a challenging time for the City,” said Mayor Shannon M. Martin. “Closing this chapter will allow us to move forward and better serve our residents.”
City Council and City staff will now review options for the appropriate use of the settlement funds, which will be discussed at future Council workshops or public meetings.
