SMS idles metal recycling facilities

Scrap Metal Services LLC, headquartered in Burnham, Illinois, plans to idle three of its SMS Paul’s Auto Yard operations in Demotte, Elkhart and Westville, Indiana.

The Coloma, Michigan yard was idled earlier this year. About 25 SMS Paul’s Auto Yard employees were affected by these reductions.

SMS plans to renew its focus on the three remaining SMS Paul’s Auto Yard locations in South Bend, Gary and Lake Station, Indiana, which will continue to offer full-service auto yard and recycling services to the public. It will also continue to serve the needs of its customers through its auto shredder operations in New Carlisle, Indiana. SMS has no immediate plans to reopen the idled SMS Paul’s yards until business conditions recover, but hopes that this difficult decision will allow SMS Paul’s to remain profitable, and increase its options with respect to future opportunities.
