Montgomery County to limit C&D waste loads

The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Maryland, announced that beginning in October 2026, new rules will limit how construction and demolition (C&D) materials are accepted at the Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station.

The changes aim to improve recycling, safety and efficiency in handling the roughly 300,000 tons of C&D material generated annually. Under the new guidelines, only loads under two tons will be accepted at the Transfer Station, with fees applied to loads over 500 pounds, while larger loads must be taken to other regional facilities better equipped to sort and recycle materials.

County officials said the changes are intended to increase recycling rates and reduce landfill use, as the Transfer Station currently lacks the capacity to properly process much of the material it receives. Larger loads will be redirected to private facilities that can handle commercial-scale recycling, helping strengthen regional recycling efforts.
