Chippers and grinders are routinely used to reduce organic waste, and in doing so, machine users may also realize a profit from the resulting material.


There are 17 standard models within the series (TC, HC and WC) of tub grinders offered by HogZilla. The largest grinder is the TCII-1564P diesel powered model – which is also the most popular. TC Series grinders can also be configured with electric power ranging from 900 to 1350 hp. “Our HC and WC Series grinders can be mounted on tracks for greater mobility at the job site, or can be ordered with a loader installed,” noted Tim Wenger, vice president, HogZilla sales. HogZilla horizontal grinders are available as either 5th wheel portable, on tracks or can be built as an electric stationary unit. Overall, CW Mill Equipment manufactures 20 standard HogZilla models with numerous options available.

All diesel powered models utilize the latest Tier 4 engines to comply with current EPA engine emission regulations, and feature a Twin Disc Torque Converter to drive the hammermill and protect the engine from damaging shock loads. Wenger stated, “They’ve proven so reliable that CW Mill stands behind them with a five year warranty.” Most electric models have a direct drive, which eliminates belt maintenance.

Wenger also explained how their customers use wood from picking stations and grind it into boiler fuel – and that C&D material can be ground for daily landfill cover after it has been inspected for metal and large concrete.

Also, TDF (tire derived fuel) is a valuable commodity. “Tire grinding has gained in popularity because hammermills are more tolerant to ‘dirty’ tires.  Tub feeders allow for processing of larger tires, further enabling tires to be broken down so the ground material can be used as TDF. When wood and tires are discarded and landfilled, trillions of BTUs are going to waste,” Wenger said.

Precision Husky Corporation is a 50 year old international company that manufactures waste wood processing equipment for the recycling, sawmill and forestry industries. Precision offers six different models of tub style grinders, and three horizontal grinders. The tub style grinders are offered as trailer mounted machines or track mounted units. Horizontal grinders are offered as trailer mounted, track mounted or stationary electric units.

“Our tub grinder models range from the 250 hp ProGrind 900 to the 1,200 hp 5200. The 5200 and our ProGrind 4000 are available with or without a Husky Knuckle Boom Loader attached. The ProGrind H3045 with 500 hp, the H3060 with 600 to 700 hp, and the H4060 with up to 1,200 hp round out our horizontal grinder offerings. Precision grinders have always been known for their ease of maintenance and reliable operational controls. Also, we offer a remote-controlled thrown object shield for our tub grinders. This option allows the units to be used in areas where space is tight.” Steve Briscoe, ProGrind sales manager, commented. Precision tub grinders are widely used by contractors, municipalities and governments around the world. The machines are used for processing yard waste, forestry waste, pallets, construction waste and storm cleanup. The material is then used to manufacture compost, fuel, mulch and more. Precision purchased the Recycling Equipment Division from The Toro Company in 1998 and expanded the Toro product line.

Briscoe noted that regulations for these machines and their operation are consistently challenging. The regulation that affects all manufacturers of these machines is EPA’s Tier 4 final emissions requirement. This in turn affects pricing and requires most manufacturers to do some redesign for engine placement. “Regardless of the challenges that come and go, we’re always excited about the opportunities that present themselves as well,” he said.


West Salem Machinery’s (WSM) large horizontal construction/demolition and urban wood grinders feature a large feed opening, a massive rotor, large diameter feedroll, and multi-strand chain infeed conveyor. The unique limited swing hammers offer maximum machine protection from large uncrushables. The large grinder offers optimum effectiveness in processing large, bulky material. Large vertical grinders are a great option for shorter material including at resource recovery and recycling facilities. The grinders can be part of a complete recycling system that converts pre-shredded construction, demolition, land clearing and commercial waste into value-added end products. The WSM Model 5472BP vertical grinder features a heavy steel housing, a 54” diameter by 72” wide fully-machined rotor and massive alloy steel swing hammers with replaceable rebuildable tips. The grinder operates at 600 hp and uses heavy-duty modular sizing screens to reduce various materials to a 2 to 4” product size at rates up to 50 TPH. The 5472BP offers WSM’s unique pivot top case that allows for quick and easy maintenance to the inside of the grinder, reducing downtime.

Large uncrushables can do extensive grinder damage. WSM offers options to minimize the damage, including a ballistics infeed chute. The unique design and construction of the chute allows large pieces of tramp metal and other uncrushables that enter the grinder to be captured and removed from the material flow – helping to protect the grinder rotor and reducing maintenance expenses. The ballistics chute also acts as a safety device by helping to eliminate projectiles from the grinder chuteworks.

According to Denise Fine, marketing coordinator, recyclers who specialize in managing recyclables for large demolition and construction projects, strive to expand their business to include more “urban forest” wood in their recoverable waste stream. “This can mean processing salvage, dunnage, concrete forms, C&D debris, tree trimmings, and other large recoverables for other markets, including papermills for biomass feedstock, an industry in which WSM has long been a leader. The continuing evolution of the recycling industry requires a partner that can work with recyclers to customize grinders for the new challenges that arrive, so together, they can find the best solution,” Fine said.
